Ichimatsu Lacquered Wooden Chopsticks by Tohachiya

Founded in 1912, Tohachiya is an important name in Japan’s Wajima-nuri lacquerware tradition.

The painstaking application of layers of urushi lacquer onto zelkowa and other woods, is the defining feature of Wajima-nuri, and with four government recognised traditional craftspeople in their stable, Tohachiya are known for their quality in this field.

Work in lacquer was the original way in which Japanese craftspeople built durability into tableware. Able to withstand high heats, and many years of use, while the work of the best makers in Wajima-nuri can be expensive, the reasoning is that it is cheap over the long lifespans of the items they create.  It is also cheap when confronted with their beauty.

These chopsticks are an introduction to the work of Tochachiya, lacquered and with a gradiented Ichimatsu chequerboard pattern.

They are available in five colour shades, and the text on the paper wrap reads: Wajima-nuri, Tohachiya.

Made from carved wood and lacquered, they are not suitable for a dishwasher, but can be washed by hand and be a daily presence on the table.

They are made using traditional techniques in Wajima, Ishikawa, Japan.
