Ridged Wajima Lacquerware Cup by Tohachiya

These cups are by Tohachiya, and important name in the Wajima lacquerware tradition, in Ishikawa.

Lacquered craft in Wajima is known for the application of multiple layers of urushi lacquer onto zelkowa and other woods.  The complicated drying process and the skill - and time - needed to produces the craft’s luxurious finish, are among the aspects that mark it out.

Popular as gifts for special occasions, or as fine items for the home, Wajima-nuri holds a particular status among Japanese crafts.

These ‘dan dan’ cups are ridged in their form, and high quality in their smooth lacquered finish.  Dan dan is a play on words in Japanese, referring to both the staggered outline of the pieces, and the dialect word for ‘thank you’.  A morning drink presented in these vessels, the makers hope, will enhance a sense of gratitude for life.

The cups use natural lacquer applied to wood.

They are 10cm high, and 8.5cm in diameter.
