Nanao candles are named after the town in which they are made, in the Noto Peninsula which protrudes into the Japan Sea. In a process largely unchanged since it began in 1892, the small company Takazawa Rousoku make their candles with natural ingredients and a wick from folded Japanese paper. The candle wax is crafted from locally sourced plant oil, made each morning by Takazawa Rousoku in a traditional process. The soft flickering light the candles produce has for years illuminated Japanese houses, and provided moments of rest and repose.
